Sacred  Namthong karpo

Blessed by Guru Rinpoche, Namthong Karpo is an extraordinary sacred place. It takes only 5minutes to walk there from the Zuri Lhakhang.

               Sacred Namthong Karpo Cave

Above the cave is a naturally formed conch and , to it’s left, a myriad of all kinds of deities may be seen in accordance with the strength of ones faith and yearning. Inside the cave one can see a wish-granting tree of natural stone ,naturally formed long life vase and form of Guru Rinpoches hat.

                               Zuri Lhakhang

To the left of the long life vase , there is a hole which a man can fit into. Formerly it was said that if a cat was sent through this hole it would come out directly in the courtyard of the Dzong. There are even tales of a few fortunate people who went in and came out from the other sides of the hole. According to the stories which have come down from luminaries of the past and to the beliefs of the common people , if one can go through and come out from other side of the hole , all evil deeds and defilements accumulated from beginningless  lifetimes will be purified. One will undoubtedly be reborn in the copper-coloured mountain paradise of Guru Padmasabhava or the pure realm of Khechara in the next life.

                 Sacred cave and stone stupa

Since the clear sky ( nam Karpo Dzongkha ) can be seen directly when one looks through the cave where the long life vase is located , it has come to be known as Namthong Karpo cave meaning “ view of the white sky. ”

Sacred Long- life vase and hat of Guru Rinpoche

Yungten Dorji Pal,a disciple of Zur Jampa Senge , discovered treasures such as self-arisen Vajrapani here. It is said that ,on the hill above the path that goes to the left from the cave, there are objects of the magic-weapon symbolic cake ( thun gtor) of body , speech and mind. If you climb up a little, there is an oven-shaped natural rock believed to be the hearth of Guru Rinpoche as well as the location of where there was a blessed water source on top of a hill. The blessed water source has now dried up and only the hearth can be seen today.
